Duties

Performs repairs and modifications of industrial machinery equipment such as: abrasive blasters machinery, hydrostatic test systems, compressed gas cylinders, and refrigerant recovery. Utilizes basic knowledge of the principles and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurements, and the properties of refrigerants, and the knowledge of the construction and operation of a variety of domestic units and systems. Corrects machinery and equipment malfunctions by performing actions such as investigating jams and inform supervisor of malfunctions as necessary. Responds to problems by adjusting machinery equipment and instructing other personnel to adjust equipment at problem locations and in other production control areas. Uses wide varieties of test diagnose and measure equipment such as leak detectors, pressure gauges, refrigerant identifier analyzer, and optic-lite cylinder inspection kit.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a General Equipment Repairer without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as performs repairs and modifications of industrial machinery equipment such as: abrasive blasters machinery, hydrostatic test systems, compressed gas cylinders, and refrigerant recovery; Responds to problems by adjusting machinery equipment and instructing other personnel to adjust equipment at problem locations and in other production control areas. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Incumbent frequently handles objects weighing up to 45 pounds and occasionally carries and lifts objects weighing 45 pounds or more over a considerable distance. Incumbent is required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and climb for sustained periods of time. Incumbent will encounter lack of movement such as standing in one place, crouching or stooping for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Incumbent will perform work indoors and outdoors, occasionally under extreme temperatures and weather conditions such as heat, rain, and snow. Incumbent will encounter such hazards, physical hardships and working conditions that constantly exposed to moving objects, elevations, paint fumes and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts, bruises, and burns. Incumbent skin and clothes will encounter grease, dust; soil and dampness frequently in work areas. Incumbent will be required to wear safety personal protective equipment (glasses, safety shoes, gloves, respirators, and other safety equipment as required) to help reduce or eliminate on the job injuries. The incumbent, per EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, must have and/or will be required to earn Section 608 Technician Certification, within their first year of employment, in order to maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could potentially release ozone depleting substances into the atmosphere.
