The VA Research Program strives to promote Veteran-centered care to improve patient experiences and outcomes across VA healthcare and community settings, and to advance value driven care by providing Veterans the highest quality care at the lowest financial burden. The position is vital within the VAMC where research programs are conducted. Health Science Specialists provide the link between Veterans and highly innovative projects.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** This is a term appointment 1 Year not to exceed 4 Years . Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 4 years and are subject to a 1 year trial period. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 4 year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Develop and maintain/update study database in accordance to sponsor and/or Pl's specifications. Manage implementation, control and reporting on clinical tests. Implement data collection and monitor protocols for difficult clinical research studies. Administer or monitor administration of tests and measurements required by project design. Record data from samples and specimens to ensure that all tracking data is organized and is monitored during the progress of the study. Identify test results and trends requiring further analysis. Prepare project and statistical reports for review process. Participate in initial classification and coding of qualitative/quantitative data and entering coding data into qualitative/quantitative software. Participate in activities in preparation of, and subsequent to, collection of study data. Assist with data analysis from a variety of sources, including databases and spreadsheets, and conceive and write reports as needed. Monitor data collection processes ensuring data integrity and completeness. Help respond to inquiries from a sponsor, clinical research coordinating center and/or site Pl on matters related to data, data compliance, and subject complaints related to data collection. Assist Pl with data analyses and interpretation. Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement: Possess a successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree, with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the Health Science Specialist. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. AND Specialized Experience: You must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience: Coordinate clinical research projects or programs, follow protocols. Enroll and interview patients and obtain informed consent. Monitors progress of clinical research projects, providing staff and tools to effectively prioritize the needs of the research project. Manage day-to-day activities of assigned research protocols and data analysis in accordance with protocol specifications. Conduct research investigatory processes, study-related interviewing, compilation and analysis of data. Make recommendations of findings. Reviews work of assigned staff in data collection, database development, data entry and data edit specification systems design, and development of associated procedures to monitor for data quality and accuracy. OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION AND EXPERIENCE: Possess the successfully completed two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of a Health Science Specialist position. NOTE: If you select this option, you must submit a copy of your transcript (unofficial or official) with your application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPEREINCE: Possess the equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of a Health Science Specialist (as described above). Copies of transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
