About the Position: This position supports the Assistant Chief of Staff, Department of Special Assistants, Public Affairs/Media Relations at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD.
Duties
Analyze the community and its supported audiences to appropriately publish information through the internet and other internal media and forums on a regular or occasional basis.
Provide commanders and directors command information updates, including current information concerning policies, guidance, and items of interest to assist in communicating with their subordinates.
Generate editorial ideas and strategies for the Public Affairs Office and command information.
Oversee the writing staff, providing story and photo ideas using seasoned judgment, knowledge of the installation and its internal audiences, and experience with various communication methods.
Provide advice and assistance to the PAO on all administrative aspects, and organizational structure of the command information function within sound position management guidelines.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather
conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at
work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- May be required to work evenings or weekends.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: planning and directing a public affairs program or public affairs initiative; establishing and maintaining professional partnerships with media such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines or various forms of social media; assisting with providing commanders or directors pertinent information updates to assist with communication with subordinates; and coordinating with local media outlets to develop strategies for advertising and/or publicizing information for the Medical Treatment Facility. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Education: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
