The employee will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator, within the transportation department program at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center in Michigan. The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types of transport vehicles to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports.

Duties

Duties include but may not be limited to the following: Operate patient transport vehicles (including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types of transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to eight (8) or more passengers. Use of safety requirements to operate a wheelchair lift and ramp, including the proper use of vehicle device restraint/lock down mechanisms to safely transport wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs, and scooters. Drive vehicles equipped with power takeoff device for transferring engine power to special-purpose accessory equipment such as winces, power lifts, and plows and spreaders. Prepare soil for plants, seeding, thinning, transplanting, trimming, pruning, fertilizing, aerating, mulching, sprayings, and dusting of grass, ground cover, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Operate vehicles equipped with power takeoff device for transferring engine power to special-purpose accessory equipment, such as winces, power lifts, plows, and spreaders. Operate hydraulic dumping mechanisms to unload or spread materials in a dump bed. May be required to drive a variety of other types of gasoline-powered equipment, including buses, forklift, small tractors, lawn mowers, utility vehicles, etc. Maintain records and document actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports. Transport patient records and maintain confidentiality until transferred to appropriate medical staff upon arrival at destination. Practice and promote safe work and driving habits, including identifying existing or potential safety hazards. Use two-way radio (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations. Can read a map in order to reach unfamiliar locations. Transport patients safely, in a manner that minimizes disruption to personnel and ensure maximum comfort during travel. Perform operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires. Perform other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Driver's License: A current and valid State Operators Permit and Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current, valid State Operators Permit and Commercial Driver's License.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work requires good coordination as well as manual dexterity. This position is required to bend, stoop, crawl, walk, climb and lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds. You may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Work is performed under various weather and road conditions, to operate snow plow and sand/salt spreader during icy and snowy conditions, and to run power tailgate on trucks in all kinds of weather conditions. You will drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems and may be exposed to the danger of serious accidents. This position is subject to cuts, bruises, and burns. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
