About the Position: The incumbent will serve as a Target Device Worker at the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security (DPTMS) in Fort Knox, KY.
Duties
Perform organizational/direct/general support-level field/shop maintenance on all range equipment.
Perform all functional tests on target mechanisms and hit sensor devices.
Operate computer keyboard console to activate target mechanisms and perform maintenance.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
- Incumbent is subject to an irregular tour of duty to cover 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a- week range operations.
- Requires frequent lifting, positioning and carrying of target mechanisms, tools and equipment weighing up to 90 pounds.
- A one-year probationary period may be required.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Target Device Worker without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common Target Device Worker duties including to install, repair, replace, recondition, troubleshoot, field test and/or shop test target mechanisms and hit sensor devices; use general electrical and mechanical hand tools (such as, soldering iron, radial arm and electrical hand saws, hand drill; use oxygen-acetylene welder for flatwork cutting and welding; read technical manuals, schematic diagrams and similar guides which cover operation and maintenance of target systems and testing techniques; Operates tractors equipped with mowers, bucket, or blade on steep hills or in rough terrain to perform range maintenance. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires frequent lifting, positioning and carrying of target mechanisms, tools and equipment weighing up to 90 pounds. Items weighing in excess of 90 pounds normally involve more than one person. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing, working in cramped positions and climbing up and down steep flights of stairs. Requires prolonged standing on concrete floors and walking over rough and uneven terrain.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside during all types of weather conditions. Works indoors in areas that may be dusty, drafty, noisy and unheated. Stands on concrete floors and works on ranges in rough terrain. Works around military combat and tactical wheel and track vehicles and heavy equipment during live firing operations. Heavy equipment is exposed to the dangers of live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies and explosives. May be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries used in operating remote-controlled target devices. Is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, cuts, burns, electrical shock, falls, vehicle accidents, snake bites, skin irritants from poisonous plants, and explosions. Omega 60 devices contain explosive charges equivalent to ¼-pound charge of TNT. Hearing protective device is issued or available for use. Position requires entering impact areas containing unexploded munitions. Environmental differential pay is authorized when the incumbent is required to load or unload Hoffman charges, when required to enter areas contaminated with unstable explosive munitions (duds) or when required to fight grass, brush or forest fires in range areas as delineated in range branch policies.
