Duties
Conducts applied research in medical entomology and insect surveillance.
Provides technical entomology for spray missions.
Assists in administering the medical entomological program.
DoD Aerial Application of Pesticide Course (AAP-001). Acts as supervisor/instructor of training aerial pesticide application course.
Communicates complex concepts, methods, and proposals.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, Series 0414.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: Entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts with your application.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Click here to view occupational requirements for this position.
Evaluation of Education: Applicants with major fields of study in biology, zoology, or invertebrate zoology may fully meet the basic educational requirements if their academic preparation included substantive instruction (including appropriate laboratory and field work) in basic general entomology, taxonomy, physiology, ecology, general and organic chemistry, general physics, and mathematics or statistics that provided some training in the analysis of variables. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts with your application.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-12, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes mastery knowledge of the field of entomology/Public Health which is sufficient to modify and extend theories and practices in the field of medical entomology, and to apply experimental theories and new developments to problems not susceptible to accepted methods. Knowledge to design projects for the AFRC & DoD aerial spray mission (entomology). Performs assignments, which involve initiating, formulating, and planning, as well as executing major studies, or continuing specialized projects of insects and plants. The Entomologist uses findings of specialized studies, new analytical developments, and modified processes to resolve novel, obscure, or highly controversial problems that affect the entomology field. Provides significant and innovative recommendations for advancing entomology programs and/or methods. Serves as a recognized authority in the entomology program.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-12 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-13 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Professional knowledge of entomology, biology, and epidemiology. Knowledge of and skill in applying insect and rodent control measures.
2. Proven ability to plan, conduct, and evaluate research studies.
3. Proven ability to write scientific and technical papers or reports.
4. Knowledge of safety precautions required when working with toxic insect/rodent controls, symptoms of debilitation due to exposure and proper first aid.
5. Knowledge of Federal regulations and procedures related to research and development procurement and contract administration.
6. Knowledge of and skill in applying insect and rodent control measures. Thorough knowledge of pesticides and rodenticides, equipment, and modes of action.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
