Position locations: Arcata and Susanville, California. Surrounding area information: Arcata and Susanville, California. We expect to fill 2 vacancies at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available. These are permanent, career seasonal positions.

Duties

Works closely with and assisting senior specialist with coordinating and consulting with Tribal, State, special interest groups and other federal agencies. Serves on interdisciplinary teams and in collaboration with other specialists. Assists with writing and reviewing biological input to environmental assessments, biological assessments, and development of protective stipulations, and resource management plans. Assists in preparing, evaluating, and conducting biological analysis of land and water resource projects. Participates in monitoring wildlife development projects. Provides input to interdisciplinary reports, environmental assessments, and protective stipulations for threatened and endangered species.

  • This is a career seasonal position. You will be in pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 12 months per calendar year.
  • When work and/or funds are unavailable, you will be placed into non-pay status.
  • Pay status may be less than 6 months during initial appointment.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified. This position has a basic education requirement which requires you to have a degree in biological science that includes: At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; AND At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); AND At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences; OR A combination of education and experience -- equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify for the GS-05: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: collecting basic biological data from field investigations; preparing samples; making observations on biological conditions; searching published technical sources for information on designated topics and preparing summaries for reference of others. -OR- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological science or a directly related field with specific coursework requirements. -OR- A combination of education and experience. To qualify for the GS-07: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting professionals with wildlife inventories; researching and evaluating wildlife habitat data; and assisting in preparing reports and planning documents. -OR- Have one year of graduate education in wildlife biology or a directly related field. -OR- Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.). S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. -OR- Possess an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. I will provide a copy of my college transcript. Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate (for GS5) and graduate (for GS7) education. Appropriate education level must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Career Ladder: This position is considered a career ladder opportunity, with a full performance level of GS-07. You may be non-competitively promoted to the next grade level at the discretion of your supervisor and is contingent upon meeting regulatory and legal requirements for promotion, satisfactory performance, and the availability of higher-level work. Promotion is not guaranteed, and no promise of promotion is implied. Physical Demands: Generally sedentary. May require occasional physical exertion such as walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces and exposure to extreme temperatures during onsite inspections. May require operation of four-wheel drive vehicles. Work Environment: Both in-office and field environments; subject to a variety of topographic and climatic conditions.
