This position is located in the Environmental Health Services within the assigned District at one of the IHS Service Units. The employee assists in the environmental health needs, plans the environmental health program, determines methods and procedures to follow, and writes reports outlining the progress and results of the environmental health program to participate in the development and implementation of a comprehensive environmental health program for American Indians/Alaska Natives.
Duties
Assists with supervisor in the development and implementation of a comprehensive environmental health program.
Conducts environmental health surveys of institutions and various facilities, and conducts follow-up surveys.
Inspects and evaluates food service activities and provides written inspection reports.
Assists in conducting food service training activities.
Inspects and evaluates individual and community sewage and refuse disposal systems for adequacy and compliance with recommended operating procedures and makes recommendations as indicated.
Plan, organizes, and recommends actions for vector and rodent control with community and health care personnel.
Collects injury data, observational occupant protection data.
Assists, develop, and participate in public health or injury prevention related projects or grants.
Reviews plans and specifications on new construction or major renovation of BIE, State, Tribal, or commercial establishments in the Service Unit.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education: A full four (4) year course of study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor's degree, and that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in a science or any combination of sciences directly related to environmental health (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical science).
OR
Experience: Four (4) year of experience in inspectional, investigational, technical support, or other responsible work that provided a knowledge and a fundamental understanding of, and the ability to use, environmental health principles, methods and techniques equivalent to that which would have been gained through a 4 year college curriculum.
OR
A combination of education and experience as described above.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-07:
One (1) full year of graduate level education related to environmental health or superior academic achievement.
OR
One (1) year of specialized experience related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal Service that includes: Knowledge of concepts, application and evaluation of a comprehensive injury prevention and environmental health programs; knowledge of principles and techniques used in the full range of injury prevention activities.
GS-09:
Two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to environmental health
OR
One (1) year of specialized experience related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service that includes: Knowledge of management concepts, planning, application and evaluation of a comprehensive injury prevention and environmental health program; knowledge of principles and techniques used in the full range of injury prevention activities.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
