The first step to becoming an IA with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is successful completion of our in-house Basic Field Training Course (BFTC) that lasts 12 weeks in Quantico, VA. While at BFTC, you will have a location menu to rank all 56 Field Offices and Headquarters (HQ) Divisions in Washington D.C in order of preference. Placement will be determined based on your preferences and needs of the FBI.
Duties
Review FBI communications to identify and evaluate the intelligence information therein.
Prepare and disseminate intelligence information while protecting sources and investigations through correct document classification and controls.
Communicate with various internal and external law enforcement and Intelligence Community(IC) members to gain a better understanding of sources, operations, missions, and requirements.
Basic analysis to include collation of raw, primary, and secondary data derived from various sources such as automated data base systems, operational intelligence reports, miscellaneous communications, case files, internal and external automation systems, and other sources.
May participate in interagency committees and meetings as representatives.
Evaluates incoming reports and information, and performs interpretations and projections under the guidance of senior analysts.
Prepares basic to complex descriptive and current reportorial intelligence reports to higher-level analysts and superiors in their assigned area of responsibility.
Ensures compliance with laws, regulations, executive orders, and directives promulgated by the Congress, Attorney General, and the Director of the FBI to achieve goals and objectives.
Qualifications
GS 7: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 5 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
Communicates effectively orally and in writing.
Assists in the preparation of reports.
Utilizes databases to further research.
GS 9: In addition to the above applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 7 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
Research, analyze and assemble pertinent facts into finished reports.
Utilize computer systems to receive and provide information using database/sources.
Apply collection methods and techniques/skills relevant to data collection/research.
Manipulate and exploit data systems to gather information and analyze and report findings
GS 11: In addition to the above applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 9 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
Conduct proactive analytical reviews of data to identify patterns.
Analyze information and make decisions regarding its value and worth to a case.
Participate in committees and meetings as representatives of an organization or functional unit.
Provide briefings, intelligence reports, and/or recommendations to management or higher level staff
Desired Skills
Desired skills are NOT mandatory and will NOT be utilized to minimally qualify applicants.
- Cyber: Those with a degree(s) or experience in computer science, computer engineering, information assurance/security, information science, data science/analytics, ethical/white hat hacking, telecommunications security, programming/coding or computer forensics.
OR
- National Security Studies: Those with degree(s) or experience in international relations/foreign affairs, international migration, world religions, homeland security, international law, international finance, or a degree of study in the following areas: Central Asia, China, Korea, the Middle East, Eurasia, Cuba, or Latin America.
OR
- Hard Sciences: Those with a degree(s) or experience in engineering, chemical, biological/agriculture, physics, physical science, electrical, biometrics, biomedical, or forensic science.
OR
- Other: Those with degree(s) or experience in accounting/economics, geospatial/mapping, open source intelligence, journalism, or psychology/sociology.
Education
All applicants must verify completion of this basic education requirement by submitting a copy of their college transcripts by the closing date of the vacancy announcement. All degrees must be from an accredited college or university.
GS-7: Applicant must have a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or one (1) full year of graduate level education. Superior academic achievement is the completion of all the requirements of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average of 2.95 or higher as recorded on an official transcript, or as based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum, or (3) honor society membership.
GS-9: Applicant must have a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
GS-11: Applicant must have a Ph.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related.
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
