THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a Welder (Title 32) (Permanent), Position Description Number D1215000 and is part of the VA G4, National Guard.

Duties

As a Welder (Title 32), WG-3703-10, you will perform the below duties: Performs welding duties using electric, acetylene, and/or inert gas shielded welding processes, pre-heating, brazing, head welding, tack welding, flame cutting, pressure welding, and heat treating. Uses templates, jigs, blueprints, and other guides to repair, modify, or fabricate metal items including repair of light or intricately made mechanical parts, which must fit in assemblies where close tolerances are required. Makes numerous types of joints using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions on light and heavy equipment such as axles, frames, gun mounts and components, carriers, tanks, metal decks constructed of a variety of weldable metals. Welds or reinforces heavy armor plate. Performs precision welding on jigs, dies, engineering and automotive equipment. Brazes dissimilar metals; flame cuts metal to size for fabrication, using regular welding equipment. Utilizes basic sheet metal tools and equipment such as a bender, press, roller, shear, and band saw to repair and/or fabricate a variety of equipment air conditioning and heater duct units, storage cabinets, and components for armored personnel carriers. Reads and interprets blueprints and sketches. Lays out, positions, and clamps work; selects type of rod and size of tip to accomplish weld. Determines heat necessary; adjusts equipment accordingly. Manually maintains proper speed, flame motion, tip and angle, and position of the welding flame to produce desired pattern. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • This position is located at a bargaining unit and eligible for union representation through Chapter 102 of the Association of Civilian Technicians.

NOTE: This position requires the applicant to be fitted for a respirator annually for daily use, to perform the duties of the position in accordance with OSHA standard 1910.134, AR 11-34 and Virginia Respiratory Protection SOP. To maintain a proper fit, you must shave daily. Facial hair presents serious problems for tight-fitting face piece respirators because their texture and density vary daily, causing unreliable respirator to fit and, therefore, present a higher potential for leakage. WHO CAN APPLY: GROUP I - All qualified Male/Female Enlisted Member (E1/PV1 - E7/SFC) currently employed (permanent) in the Virginia Army National Guard Military Technician Program. GROUP II - All qualified Virginia Army National Guard Male/Female Enlisted Member (E1/PV1 - E7/SFC) regardless of employment status (Traditional, Military Technician or AGR). To be considered as a Group II applicant, proof of appointment/enlistment in the Virginia Army National Guard must be attached if the appointment/enlistment occurred within 60 days prior to, or during, the advertisement period. Military Grades: Enlisted Member (E1/PV1 - E7/SFC) GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Applicant must have experience or training performing a variety of welding in support of maintenance activities. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicant must have at least 18 months of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the WG 09 level, or equivalent pay band in other pay systems in the Federal government. This experience may also have been obtained in the private sector, but must demonstrate that it is comparable to the WG grade indicated. This experience must include activities such as: Experience performing welding duties using electric, acetylene, and/or inert gas shielded welding processes, pre-heating, brazing, head welding, tack welding, flame cutting, pressure welding, and heat treating. Experience using templates, jigs, blueprints, and other guides to repair, modify, or fabricate metal items including repair of light or intricately made mechanical parts, which must fit in assemblies where close tolerances are required. Experience brazing dissimilar metals; flame cuts metal to size for fabrication, using regular welding equipment. Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and sketches.
