This Pipefitter position is within the Facilities Management Service at the Bedford VA Healthcare System, located in Bedford, Massachusetts. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
The incumbent performs a variety of tasks involving the installation, modification and repairs to new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems and equipment (such as sewage, hot/cold water, oil and gas distribution, including associated fixtures, valves, controls and devices. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Performs pipefitting duties on patient wards, tunnels, and administrative areas;
Prefabricates pressure-reducing valve stations, trap stations, rebuilding, trap rebuilding, etc.;
Plans and lays out assembly of pipe sections and systems including related equipment, fixtures, and devices for new installations;
Utilizes construction and building trade tools, equipment, and materials;
Selects materials, parts and supplies needed to make repairs to plumbing systems;
Conducts preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment;
Cuts route openings;
Installs pipe hangers, supports, and pipe coverings; and
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The incumbent may be required to bend, reach and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods. Frequently works from ladders, platforms, high places and cramped spaces. Considerable climbing, walking and stooping is also required for this position. Frequently lifts and moves objects up to 50lbs. and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50lbs. either alone or with others.
Working Conditions: The incumbent works indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions, and is exposed to the usual occupational hazards. Must work in steam manholes, unexcavated cellars, attics, pipe spaces, around boilers and high pressure steam lines. Incumbent is subject to possible burns and other construction hazards, above normal temperatures and exposure to toxic and explosive vapors. Required to work in noisy, dusty, dirty and damp places. Occasionally required to work outdoors in bad weather.
