Duties

As a Research Microbiologist, you will: Serve as nationally and internationally recognized expert, researcher, and scientist for broad research that focuses on improving various diagnostic tests for bacterial vector-borne disease by state health departments, other national and international laboratories, and private industry (through technology transfer). Determine areas for initiating and planning research activities. Formulate and administer plans and policies designed to meet critical program objectives. Ensure research and other programs comply with legal and regulatory requirements and meet customer needs. Provide input and support on employing new laboratory approaches, techniques, and resolution of technical difficulties.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Have a degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR have a Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: supporting national and international stakeholders on arbovirus diagnostics, developing research projects related to arbovirus, and integrating laboratory and surveillance data. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
