This position is located in Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Sector Houston/Galveston (D8), in Houston, TX.

Duties

The position serves as a Vessel Traffic Management Specialist responsible for providing vessel traffic management services in a Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Center on a rotating shift.  The Vessel Traffic Center is a twenty-four hour per day, seven days a week operation.Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:     

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A final offer of employment is contingent upon a negative drug test result.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.
  • This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • The position requires a pre-employment physical.

Qualifications

To Qualify for the GS-11 Grade Level:  Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, or abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.  Examples of specialized experience include:  working in a transportation facility or terminal which involved utilizing Federal, State, and municipal regulations governing the use of maritime vessels; promoting the safe and efficient movement of maritime traffic; ensuring that vessel traffic is properly informed, advised, or directed in order to reduce the probability of collisions, rammings, groundings, and environmental damage; monitoring the progress of vessels, and informing, advising, or directing vessel operators; employing computers and communications technology to provide critical information and guidance to a master, pilot, or the persons in charge of vessels.  OR Have successfully completed a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.  OR A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
