Duties

Navigates both inshore and offshore often times with no marked locations or visual reference points as work can be far from land. Directs the day-to-day operation of the survey vessel and direct crew to perform necessary tasks pertaining to the particular mission at hand. Conducts periodic drills for fire, man overboard, and abandon ship. Using Government vehicle, tows a survey vessel on and off interstate and local roads and to get to and from a boat docks or launching ramps. Oversees and supervises routine inspections and servicing of the boat and its equipment. Cares properly for required fire protection and safety equipment. Performs a variety of general boat maintenance and housekeeping work. Uses other electronic navigational and operating equipment such as radar, GPS, depth sounders, auto pilot, and sidescan sonars for obstruction detection and location. Makes minor repairs to diesel engines, generators, air compressors, light plant and other auxiliary equipment. Assumes accountability for safekeeping and preservation of all property and equipment on the survey boat. Complies with general safety guidelines and rules of law concerning the operation of motor vehicles and equipment. Shows up to work dependably during assigned work hours.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to lift over 50 lbs.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • A pre-appointment Physical exam is required and the incumbent will be subject to scheduled medical surveillance.
  • Must wear protective clothing or equipment, as the particular situation requires such as coveralls, rubber boots, gloves, steel-toed shoes, goggles, earmuffs, life jacket or other PFD, etc.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position under the U. S. Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Civilian Drug Testing Program.
  • Must possess a valid Masters license for near coastal, steam or motor vessels of 50 gross tons, issued from U.S. Coast Guard and requires 2 yrs exp., and able to obtain district operators license for operation of vessels of less than 26 ft.
  • Business travel and overnight travel for regular duties may be as much as 25%. Remote locations may require use of Privately Owned Vehicle (POV).

Have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex duties as a Small Craft Operator such as being responsible for the safe operation various types of watercraft including smaller, trailerable vessels of various designs and engines. Work is primarily with open water bays, harbors, sounds, and offshore coastal environments as well as inland waterways and coastal routes which include Federal navigation channels with heavy commercial shipping traffic and military ships and submarines. I work under normal supervision of a supervisor who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
