About the Position: As security assistant, incumbent is responsible for performing and resolving a full range of both standard procedural and non-recurring/unusual visitor access assignments. Operates and performs research queries on the NCIC National Crime Information Center (NCIC/NCCIC) workstation terminal(s) in accordance with (IAW) federal and state laws.

Duties

Processes a variety of NCIC queries and provides timely response as appropriate or required. Locates and transcribes data using specialized codes IAW federal and state regulations. Screens all employees, visitors, consultants, and contractor personnel daily, exercising patience, discretion, and diplomacy to determine status of an individual and reason for and location of visit. Denies access to unauthorized personnel or those who do not meet authorized entry criteria. Controls, prepares, issues identification badges, cards, and passes that allow access of civilian, military, contractor personnel, and visitors on to the installation. Operates and maintains various items of access control equipment and automated systems to include computer equipment used in the identification and registration process. Loads, unloads, adjusts, and operates simple cameras under controlled conditions to take identification photographs. Operates ancillary equipment such as a laminating press, hole punch, trimmer, and installation identification machines. Operates radios IAW established protocols to communicate with DASG, Law Enforcement or other first responders as needed. Provides office automation support to the Security Office by providing word-processing, database mgt, email, and related functions in support of the staff.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
  • Must be willing and able to travel 10 percent for business.
  • This position requires a qualified typing that can type 40 words per minute.
  • Serve a one-year probationary period unless already completed.

Specialized Experience for the GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience which includes: Experience using automated systems to query and verify suitability for visitor entry into secured area or installations; Experience transcribing data using special codes IAW federal and state regulations (e.g. style codes, manufacturer's codes, wanted or missing persons, etc.); and Experience dealing with difficult customers who may be found ineligible for access. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-06: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service with knowledge and/or experience in the following areas: experience maintaining a variety of files, databases, registers, and installation access approval/denial packets using automated systems such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Excel to keep accurate reports and verify suitability for visitor entry into secured area or installations; experience transcribing data using special codes IAW federal and state regulations (e.g. style codes, manufacturer's codes, wanted or missing persons, etc.); Report potential controversial matters or developing security conditions or issues to supervisor for immediate action if necessary, and experience dealing with difficult customers who may be found ineligible for access. For this job, at the GS-06 grade level, you must qualify on experience alone. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Access Control OperationsOral CommunicationSecurity Equipment Operation Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04).
