This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
The Microsystems and Nanotechnology Division and the Statistical Engineering Division of NIST are translating the research and development of prototype microscopy standards into the production and certification of NIST reference materials for widespread distribution. The major duties of this position fall into three categories.
- The first category of major duties is the production of array standards of several types, including silicon frusta, metallic holes, and polymeric pillars, by the optimization and application of thin film processing and electron beam lithography. This work will occur in the NIST CNST NanoFab.
- The second category of major duties is the characterization of array standards by scanning electron microscopy and super-resolution optical microscopy. This work will occur in the CNST NanoFab and in the laboratories of the Microsystems and Nanotechnology Division.
- The third category of major duties is the reduction of microscopy data and analysis of individual array standards by the application of statistical models to evaluate uncertainty and assure quality. This work will occur in the Microsystems and Nanotechnology Division in collaboration with the Statistical Engineering Division.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
or
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
In addition to the above basic requirements, this position requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized experience is defined as: Device fabrication by thin film processing and electron beam lithography. Device test and data analysis

Master's or equivalent graduate degree

Combindation of education and experience.
