You will serve as a Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist (Claims Examiner) in the Office of Judge Advocate General (OJAG) Admiralty and Claims Division (Code 15) Medical Care Recovery Units (MCRU) of NLSC.

Duties

You will be responsible for planning work schedules to meet mission requirements, communicating performance expectations, evaluating employees’ performance, and providing necessary training and mentoring. You will be responsible for approving leave requests, and promptly addressing employee performance and conduct issues. You will regularly review claims file allocation to ensure equitable distribution of an annual workload of over 6000 claims among examiners and transfers files if necessary to maintain equitable balance of work load. You will have the authority to deny or grant waiver/compromise requests up to any authority granted by the Division Director, usually $10,000, and makes sound recommendations to the Managing Attorney on those requests. You will draft and sign non-routine letters containing legal analysis of particular cases. You will assign and coordinate distribution of workload to subordinate staff of six to nine Claims Examiners and one to four Claims Assistant(s) to ensure optimum resource utilization. You will assess and revise policies and procedures as needed to find ways to improve quality, timeliness, and efficiency of work. You will administer and oversee multiple civilian employee personnel (CIVPERS) programs within the MCRU and meet various reporting requirements. You will perform administrative functions as appropriate to ensure the efficient operation of the MCRU. You will ensure personal health information (PHI) and personally identifiable information (PII) are properly safeguarded. You will serve as the MCRU Personal Property Manager, accounting for all reportable personal property in accordance with established guidelines.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade level (GS-09) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing medical care recovery claims work incorporating most or all of the following duties: (1) Providing assistance in processing affirmative medical care recovery claims; (2) Utilizing personal injury tort and insurance law to determine whether an affirmative action claim should be pursued; (3) Interpreting legal aspects of case law relating to affirmative claims for medical care; (4) Communicating both orally and in writing in a professional manner to assist in settlement of medical claims; and (5) Performing administrative functions at the supervisory level. Education

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if directly related to the position being filled.

3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, if directly related to the position being filled.
or
LL.M., if directly related to the position being filled.
