You will serve as a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (NUCLEAR) in the Nuclear Production Department of PEARL HARBOR NSY AND IMF.

Duties

You will remove equipment and components from ships when no longer needed. You will layout, install, fabricate duct systems and trouble shoot various ventilation services and systems required in support of shipboard overhaul and repair work. You will perform nuclear work operations such as reactor plant ventilation system, generate and issue pure water, liquid waste transfer, etc. You will be responsible for proper and safe installation and operation of air conditioning and ventilation distribution systems aboard ships as required for temporary services. You will solve work problems by adopting established shop practices. You will be planning, laying out, and carrying out work assignments with minimum supervision.

  • This position may require travel to places within and outside the contiguous United States which could include remote or isolated sites. You may be required to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • If eligible for permanent change of station, the appointee will be required to sign a transportation agreement to establish a Government time in service requirement of 12 months.

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Must successfully complete all necessary radiological, nuclear and non-nuclear training and requirements.

Performs work indoors and outdoors exposing them to the prevailing weather conditions, noise, and intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces. Occasionally, work is performed in cramped areas, close confined spaces of ships and submarines with minimum light and ventilation. They are regularly exposed to moving objects, elevations, and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. They are also exposed to the possibility of an electric shock when working on wet surfaces. Serious injury from slipping and falling may occur while working in the dry dock, uneven surfaces, and from ladders and staging. Dirt, grease, dampness, and chemical fumes are frequently encountered. The shipyard maintains personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations to ensure employee safety and health.

Frequently handle objects weighing up to 44 pounds and occasionally, heavy exertion is required. Work requires frequent sitting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, climbing, cramped and awkward positions. Other physical requirements include visual acuity color vision, depth perception, close hand- eye or hand-eye-foot coordination, finger dexterity and keen hearing.
