About the Position: Independently conducts surveys of the district's navigation channels to locate shoaling channel deficiencies, sunken vessels or obstructions that may interfere with use of the waterway. Directs the use of equipment, vessels, and personnel to gather information on channel conditions.
Duties
Conduct hydrographic surveys, performing a variety of duties required to survey channels, harbors, rivers, and adjacent features.
Employee utilizes highly technical, state of the art computerized survey equipment situated on trailer-able survey boats, and ocean-going survey vessels up to 65 feet in length.
Investigates channel conditions and underwater channel obstructions and provides reports on conditions and impact to navigation.
Directs the use of equipment, vessels, and personnel to gather necessary information on channel conditions.
Analyzes and provides technical interpretation of raw survey data and recommends next course of action.
Investigates abnormal and newly developed shoal areas to ascertain causes and effects.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment to this position may be subject to a one-year probationary period.
- Possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
- Possess or obtain and maintain a valid USACE Boat Operators license or U.S. Coast Guard License within one year of appointment.
- Drug testing is required for this position.
- Physical is required for this position.
- This position requires working an alternate work schedule of Monday through Thursday (or Tuesday through Friday), 10-hour days, 4 days a week.
- This position may require travel (TDY) up to 5% of the time.

Specialized Experience for GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) assisting with preventative equipment maintenance; OR 2) assisting with field surveys. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
Specialized Experience for GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) coordinating preventative maintenance and safety of equipment; OR 2) using surveying techniques and guidelines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Specialized Experience for GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) coordinating preventative maintenance and safety of equipment; AND 2) using surveying techniques and guidelines; AND 3) Working in a team environment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Specialized Experience for GS-08: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Using surveying techniques and guidelines; 2) Analyzing and interpreting field data results; AND 3) Using Windows-based data acquisition and editing systems, such as Hypack Software. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Specialized Experience for GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Using hydrographic surveying techniques and guidelines; 2) Operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining a wide range of field surveying instruments; 3) Coordinating hydrographic survey operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Time in Grade Requirement: Time-In-Grade requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) Position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade: GS-04 for the GS-05; GS-05 for the GS-06, GS-06 for the GS-07, GS-07 for the GS-08, and GS-08 for the GS-09 (or equivalent).
With regards to time-in-grade validation, if you held a position other than a GS pay plan, be sure your resume includes the pay plan and the salary you earned during the assignment. Without this information, your time-in-grade validation may not be able to be verified and will result in your not meeting the time-grade requirement for this vacancy.

Education
Education substitution is allowed at the GS-05 grade level only. Qualifications for the GS-06/07/08/09 grade levels will be determined based on meeting the specialized experience requirements for each grade level as listed above.
