Duties
Serving as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic WG-5803-10 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in the Mobile Assets Branch/Garage (MAB) within the Asset and Logistics Management Division (ALM) under the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate.
The primary purpose of this position is beign responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and performing requisite repair duties for the upkeep; operation and usage of FLETC's specialized training facilities and, as necessary, support facilities.
Typical duties include:
Determining the cause of malfunctions and making major repairs, overhauls, and modifications to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles such as bulldozers, road graders, front-end loaders, backhoes, mobile cranes, fire engines and pump trucks, refueling equipment, excavators, trucks and trailers, material handling equipment, hazardous material vehicles, tank trucks, and buses.
Performing maintenance and condition inspections to weight and material handling equipment per manufacturer's guidelines.
Testing and certifying material and weight handling equipment.
Making welding repairs to effect restoration of heavy equipment items of construction, material handling, and automotive equipment.
Utilizing proper maintenance, inspection, and using guidelines with all equipment and tools.
Position will operate medium duty tow truck and wrecker to move, recover, transport, and relocate light to medium duty automobiles and other equipment within the allowable Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the tow truck or wrecker.

- Must successfully pass a background investigation for Suitability/Fitness (5N – Non-Sensitive, Moderate Risk).
- Occasional travel may be required.

- This position is Emergency Essential and required to sustain FLETC’s operations under all conditions.
- Required to undergo initial and random drug testing for illegal drug use. Employment is contingent upon favorable results.
- Must be able to meet job-related medical and/or fitness standards. You will be subject to a pre-appointment and annual physical examination.
- Must obtain EPA Clean Air Act Section 608 technician certification (Type II or Universal) to maintain, service, or repair equipment containing any class I or class II refrigerant or any non-exempt substitute refrigerant within 90 days of employment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class B state driver’s license, possess, and maintain a safe driving record, and demonstrate medical qualification to operate vehicles safely and in accordance with Federally standards and procedures.

While there is no minimum amount of training or experience required, the applicant must have had experience, military or civilian, paid or unpaid, of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic WG-5803-10. The applicant must have experience which requires thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of heavy-duty systems, assemblies, and parts to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify heavy mobile equipment systems and vehicles.

Time-in-grade: Current General Schedule (GS) federal employees, and those that have served in GS positions within the last 52 weeks, must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade, or a combination of the next lower grade level and an equivalent band in the federal service by the closing of this announcement.

Working Conditions: Position will normally work inside on an unheated covered surface or outside in all weather conditions. Exposed to dampness, noise, engine exhaust and petroleum vapors. Constant danger of explosion due to handling of fuel. Performs duties in foot hazardous areas requiring the use of protective footwear. Typically works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, protective footwear, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some safety equipment may be hot and uncomfortable and will be worn for long periods of time.
Physical Effort: The position will be required to work in often tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. They work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. They perform strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. They frequently lift and carry items, unassisted, weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and often exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. They frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. They are sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.
