About the Position: This position is located in the Department of Pediatrics, at Brooke Army Medical Center, in San Antonio Texas.
A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.
Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.
Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.
Duties
Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments of children to assist in the development of treatment plans.
Conduct crisis counseling with children and families to lessen impact of acute, chronic, or terminal illnesses.
Design appropriate therapeutic activities by assessing individual patient needs.
Coordinate with primary medical team to provide medical play therapy for patients and families.
Assist care team during treatment by developing chart documentation forms and procedures for medical services.
Participate in educational programs for medical staff, schools, religious organizations, or private groups.
Prepare statistical based reports for organizational awareness of the program progress and goals.
Utilize a variety of computer-based programs and software packages to prepare reports.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- This position may be required to work uncommon tours of duty hours, working either fixed or rotating shift which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- This position may require the incumbent to work weekends and/or holidays.
- This position requires current Certified Child Life Specialist credentials from an accredited institution or must be obtained within one year of employment. Pre-requisites must be completed prior to certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. STEPS TO BECOME CERTIFIED: To sit for the Child Life certification exam, an individual must complete the following academic requirements: a bachelor's degree in any field of study and additional academic coursework required by the Association of Child Life Professionals. The academic coursework can be obtained by graduating from an ACLP-endorsed academic program or completing 10 additional specific college courses. Students must then complete a (minimum) 600 hour clinical internship in child life under the direct supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist.

Basic Requirement for a Child Life Specialist:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, such as Child Life.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
OR
C. Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing educational resources to support patients and families, conducting comprehensive psychosocial assessments for children, and assisting in the development of a treatment plan. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Child Life.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
