You will serve as a LEAD INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Occupational Health Branch, Code 106.21, Occupational Safety and Health Division, Code 106.2, Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) Office, Code 106, of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will serve as the Senior Industrial Hygienist for NNSY. You will be responsible for oversight of all technical aspects of the Industrial Hygiene program, to include all NNSY work in Charleston, Kings Bay, and New York. You will serve as the subject matter expert for multiple Industrial Hygiene program areas. You will serve as serves as the Personnel Development Coordinator (PDC) for entry level Industrial Hygienists and Occupational Safety and Health Specialists (OSH Specialists) progressing through their career ladder to become Industrial Hygienists. You will be responsible for developing and overseeing Industrial Hygiene program elements. You will draft directives, instructions, and standard operational procedures for NNSY.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with providing expert advice, guidance, and direction to engineering departments, department heads and directors, project managers, product line managers, first line supervisors or similar. Experience with leading special projects, requiring resolutions of controversial or difficult occupational health problems. Experience with development of safety and occupational health procedures, processes, development, and preventative measures. Experience with local and federal policies in safety and occupational health. Experience with coaching, facilitating and mentoring, incumbents in safety or occupational health programs. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:
  • Successful completion of a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science.

  • Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene.
