About the Position: This position falls under Defense Health Agency at Army Health Center McDonald, Directorate of Clinical Support; and requires knowledge of preparing phlebotomy sites, receptionist duties including providing guidance to patients and answering inquiries, processing pathology specimens for shipment, trains new staff on front desk and phlebotomy procedures and performs inventories for supplies. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Works as a Medical Technician (Phlebotomy/Front Desk), obtaining venous and capillary blood specimens from adults and children using knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic technique and phlebotomy material selection Prepares phlebotomy site for proper specimen collection and is based upon knowledge and standard operating procedures regarding blood specimen types, anticoagulants, transport conditions, test requested, patient criteria and medical staff input. Serves as receptionist at the laboratory front desk, greeting patients, providing them with appropriate guidance, answering nontechnical inquiries, and referring technical inquiries to the appropriate laboratory staff member. Aids physicians by processing a wide variety of clinical pathology specimens for shipment to civilian and military reference laboratories. Receives, packages, and ships anatomical pathology and cytology samples to appropriate military and civilian reference laboratories. Packages specimens for pickup by courier and mailing to the reference laboratory. Receives and processes specimens into individual or batches , making required chain of custody annotations, and reviewing specimen labeling and custody documents for accuracy, correctness, and shipping/sample discrepancies. Trains new military and civilian laboratory staff in procedures, practices, and techniques within areas of Central Processing, Front Desk and phlebotomy procedures. Performs inventories, rotates stock and requisitions supplies for assigned work areas.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R and must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • This position requires specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of 18 years of age on a regular and recurring basis.
  • Basic Life Support certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association is required.
  • TDY may be required 5% of the time.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.

Specialized Experience: Performs primarily urinalysis, urine microscopic, and waived testing; but must also have working knowledge and experience in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Serology, and/or Blood Bank; performing phlebotomy; operating and maintaining laboratory instruments and equipment; and assisting in conducting quality control procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
