The Scientific, Technical, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) Occupations direct hire authority for Chemists GS-1320's is being used to fill this position.
Salary:
$80,665 (Step 01) to $104,861 (Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
Duties
As a Chemist within the National Water Quality Lab, some of your specific duties will include:
Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: At all grade levels, applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for the GS-1320 Chemist series.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-11:
To qualify for the GS-11 level, applicants must have the basic education requirement stated above, PLUS have specialized experience, graduate education, or a combination of specialized experience and/or graduate education as outlined below:
Specialized experience: One full year of specialized experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include:
Independent responsibility for performing established, standardized chemical tests and analyses on a broad range of samples in a laboratory setting.
Implementing new testing and analytical methods.
Developing and suggesting minor adaptations & fills in the gaps found in newly developed guidelines that govern the new testing methods.

Graduate degree: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in chemistry or other directly related field of study.
**OR
Graduate education: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours or 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in chemistry or other directly related field of study.
