This position is located within the Location Support Services, for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), in Stoneville, MS. In this position, you will assist journeyman-level workers by performing various semi-skilled and manual labor tasks typically associated with routine carpentry, construction, painting, plumbing, electrical, and equipment repairs, as well as, motor vehicle operation and maintenance.

Duties

Assists in the construction and repairs of carpentry projects. This includes but is not limited to small buildings, walls, ramps, stairways, installing windows and doors, and repairing and installing drywall. Assists with cutting and threading steel pipe, gluing PVC pipe to repair water leaks, and installing new equipment that requires water lines. Assists with running conduits and pulling wires. Replaces fluorescent light bulbs on a regular maintenance schedule. Paints interior and exterior of small buildings, rails, stairways, and other structural surfaces such as wood, metal, and concrete. Mops, cleans, and hauls trash. Assembles furniture. Moves heavy furniture and sets up conference rooms for different types of meetings, seminars, conferences by arranging tables, chairs, and equipment as required. Unclogs drains and sewer lines using hand and power snakes. Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment, such as pickup trucks, utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), forklifts (9000 lbs.), boom lift (33,500 lbs.), tractors, and backhoes (5,000 lbs.). Loads and unloads trucks, moves supplies, makes pickups and deliveries of supplies and materials.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 08/19/2024. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Physical Effort: Moderately heavy physical effort is required when using ladders and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, etc.; operating powered equipment; carrying materials. Work requires continual standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Using normal safety practices, only a minor risk of injury is expected. Working Conditions: Works inside with adequate light, heat, and ventilation; may be exposed to dusty, dirty, or greasy conditions. Some duties require working outside in inclement weather. May be subject to injuries such as cuts, bruises, and scrapes when working from ladders and scaffolds or working with tools; or skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions. Other Conditions of Employment: Must obtain and maintain a Government Driver's License for the type of equipment operated, and know and understand the safety rules governing the operation of that equipment. Must obtain and maintain a valid State driver's license. This position requires a pre-employment and annual physical. Safety: Must possess knowledge of all safety rules and procedures prescribed for emergencies or special situations.
