About the Position: You will function as a Chemist with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit Planning, Office of Environmental Analysis Branch located in Detroit, MI.
Duties
Performs professional work in the field of Chemistry.
Manages environmental services contract functions.
Serves as Contracting Officer's representative.
Subject matter expert on complex chemistry problems.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be willing and able to participate in the medical surveillance program and attend 40 hours of HTRW training and updates.
- TDY may be required as needed (up to 20% of the time).
- Position requires a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.

Basic Requirement for Chemist:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: serving as the district's subject matter expert for all chemistry aspects of sediment and water quality sampling and evaluation efforts. Provides qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses advice regarding hazardous, toxic, radioactive waste, investigations, studies, and design matters such as sampling, testing, and analysis of onsite media including highly specialized sampling techniques, quality assurance, and chemical aspects of site engineering plans, specifications and remediation actions. Serves as the environmental compliance specialist in preparing, negotiating, evaluating, and monitoring environmental service task order/delivery order contracts. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
