About the Position: Serves as a professional Forester, planning and conducting forest inventory activities and other specified portions of a multiple use forest management program for approximately 162,000 acres for the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Liberty, North Carolina.

Duties

Make on the ground examinations and analyses of forest areas to determine which areas require cultural treatment in terms of the total ecosystem. Review and approve project plans for special administrative studies of silvicultural methods and techniques in planting, seeding, site preparation, timber stand improvement, and tree and shrub improvement projects. Plan, coordinate, and administer the technical phases of forest area planting and seeding programs, including the inventory of plantable areas. Maintain forest inventory in a Geographic Information System (GIS) database for use regarding timber management and making red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) matrix calculations. Mark trees according to the most recent guidance for the retention of required habitat and development of future support areas for endangered species and improvement of the longleaf pine-wiregrass ecosystem. Prepare forms and reports on endangered species, fire, and forest data. Lead and participate in forest management and fire management projects including tree planting, stocking surveys, prescribed burning, and wildfire containment activities.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas: Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) assisting with forest programs such as: forest management, timber sales, and timber improvement; 2) examining areas of the forest and determining cultural treatments; 3) assisting with silvicultural practices such as: planting and seeding procedures, ground and seedbed, and control of animals and insects; and 4) fire management as it relates to prescribed burning and wildfire containment activities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Forestry, Forest Biology, or Forest Management. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
