The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) for Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Sterile Processing Service, is located at Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System, Temple, Texas. This is an advanced level position in Sterile Processing Service as a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing).
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Perform Supervisory Medical Supply Technician duties in sterilization, preparation, supply items and reusable medical equipment decontamination and distribution support for the medical center.
Perform Supervisory Medical Supply Technician duties in Decontamination, Preparation, Sterilization, and Case Car Sections of Sterile Processing Service (SPS).
Responsible for distribution and balance of workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assure that each employee is assigned a fair amount of work.
Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and provides written instruction and references to staff as needed.
Provide on the job training to new employees in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures and manufacturer instruction for use.
Resolve complaints from employees, approves leave, and monitors performance, progress and training needs of employees, for establishing, monitoring, and communicating Performance Appraisals.
Direct movement of RME received in SPS and ensures items are processed without delays. Resolves consumer and subordinate needs.
Direct operation of all monitoring of the sterilization process, to include the biological indicator results and documentation.
Determine and direct staff in correct method for decontamination.
Conduct on-the-job training orientation for Medical Supply Technicians in Decontamination and Preparation areas.
Assist Operating Room staff in surgical instrumentation and needs.
Continually monitors standard operating procedures to assure compliance of VA regulations, Directives and other accrediting agencies.
Daily inspects all work spaces and initiates necessary action to correct notable safety and fire hazards.
Work Schedule: 1:00pm.-9:30pm (8-hour tour); 1:30pm-12:00pm (10-hour tour); including Nights/Weekends/Holidays

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determination:
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07). Examples of specialized experience may include, but not limited to: Work in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team. Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Assures an even workflow and distribution of the workload. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns work to staff based on experience and training needs. Monitors and reports on the status of work. Ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow. Reviews work in progress or spot checks work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions on such things as work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, material and instrumentation. Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion. Instructs employees on work-related activities, policies, procedures and goals.
Preferred Experience:
Minimum three years Sterile Processing experience
Minimum one-year Sterile Processing experience
Working knowledge of Censitrac instrument tracking system
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PPT).

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08.
Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation.
