Duties

Serve as the Deputy Chief, Medical Records Branch, responsible for supervising inpatient and outpatient records, transcription, release of information, inpatient and outpatient coding and birth registration. Manage the medical records programs for both inpatient and outpatient records and is responsible for developing and implementing administrative decisions directly affecting the care of medical records programs. Keep abreast of advances and changing trends in the specialty of medical records administration by maintaining active membership in professional organizations, attending special seminars, and reading technical publications. Coordinate the training and continuing education of medical staff and coders on Diagnosis Related Groups processes, promoting efficient and effective use of resources while maintaining high quality patient care.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a minimum Secret security clearance. The incumbent must remain eligible for the required clearance at all times while serving in this position.
  • Two-year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Work may require travel away from the normal duty station. TDY 20%
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted through full resumption of all functions. IAW, DoDI 3020-42, Defense Continuity Programs
  • Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Administrator (RHIA) is highly desired.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing the medical records programs for both inpatient and outpatient records; performing technically complex duties involved with auditing, analyzing, coding, and reviewing medical data and medical records; serving as a technical coordinator on all phases of coding; and making administrative decisions directly affecting the care of medical records programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11)
