This position is for a certified pharmacy technician at the Central Virginia VA Healthcare System. Pharmacy technicians at this level can mentor and train lower grade technicians in the practice setting. Technician will assist the pharmacist in providing optimal care and timely service in accordance with the mission, vision, and goals of the Central Virginia VA Healthcare System and Pharmacy. Technician is expected to accomplish all duties related to stocking, delivering and inventory.
Duties
Duties to include but not limited to:
Accurately interpret, fills and prepares prescriptions with appropriate medications and or medical supplies for pharmacist verification.
Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition by assuring that all stock and equipment are in assigned places and all shelves and counters are free of dust and debris in order to create optimal work areas
Accurately fills prescriptio items for wards using Automatic Replenishment reports
Assures the timely completion of all prescriptions
Assures drugs and supplies are appropriately stored and secured according to USP and VA guidelines, including the storage of high-risk, look a-like sound a-like, hazardous, controlled substances, corrosive chemical, flammable liquids, and refrigerated items.
Records expiration dates in the automatic prescription dispensing system upon receipt
Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Identifies basic therapeutic problems, such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same classes and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention
Preforms duties of all lower grade technicians as needed
Assists higher level technicians as needed
Complies with all VHA, Medical Center, and Pharmacy regulations, directives, policies, and procedures
Maintains national certification with PTCB or ExCPT
Participate in performance improvement initiatives for pharmacy
Completes all National, VISN, local, and Pharmacy mandatory trainings in a timely manner
Working knowledge of position specific equipment including vertical and horizontal laminar flow hoods and all disposable supplies needed to compound sterile products
Assists in airborne particulate and microbial testing and surface testing to ensure cleaning schedules are met
Maintains re-packinging records that assures all regulatory and review standards are met
Inventories and replenishes emergency trays

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English proficiency
PTCB or NHA certification
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Experience: One year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the lower grade level of GS-07.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated:
Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section.
Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
Preferred Experience: IV room experience, inpatient pharmacy experience

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 8.
Physical Requirements:
The work requires repetitive motion, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, pushing heavy or bulky carts and at times may be physically demanding, sometimes for extended periods of time.
Must be able to adjust to changing environments.
Must demonstrate the ability to stay on task, to multi-task, and to adapt to the speed of the workflow as required to provide the best customer service possible to the veterans and staff.
