The primary purpose of this position is to perform pest detection and extermination work.
Duties
- Conducts troubleshooting inspections of assigned facilities, grounds, drainage ditches, and marsh and
water areas for pest infestation.
- Independently uses IPM procedures to control pests in and around residences, offices, food service
areas, storage areas, aquatic areas, lawns, trees, and shrubs.
- Conducts pest control operations in several locations by applying pesticides using various application
methods.
- Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power equipment/tools such as fogger mist machines,
injection pumps, and hand spraying equipment in applying liquids or powders.
- Performs pest controlling duties in a safe manner, utilizing safety practices and procedure, and
complying with established safety rules and regulations.

- Shift work and/or overtime may be required.
- The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required for the position.
- Exposure to toxic chemicals or other hazards may require occupational health examinations.
- The selection and use of all EPA restricted use pesticides must be by or under the direct supervision of a
certified pesticide applicator or by specially trained uncertified personnel under the direct supervision of a
certified applicator.
- Must attend technical training and be certified to apply pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides and fully meet the recertification requirements.
- May be required to assist other workers in various crafts.
- May be required to train and/or guide lower graded employees.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5000 Plant and Animal Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a PEST CONTROLLER without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of physical characteristics, life cycles, and feeding habits of a wide variety of pests. Ability to be licensed to apply herbicides and pesticides in the State of South Carolina.
2. Knowledge of advanced principles and procedures of IPM including chemical control techniques,
precise surveys, and parasite and predator usage.
3. Knowledge of pesticide toxicity, chemical solutions, and baits.
4. Knowledge of federal and state requirements dealing with the mixture, application, and disposal of
restricted use pesticides. Skill in reading and applying directions that relate to the mixture, use, and application of various kinds of general and restricted used pesticides.
5. Knowledge of and ability to apply safety and environmental standards, regulations, and requirements.
6. Skill in operating and maintaining pest control tools and equipment and in selecting equipment
appropriate for accomplishing assignments. Ability to interpret building plans and blueprints.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: With assistance of other employees and/or with use of lifting and carrying devices, lifts, handles, and carries materials weighing over 50 pounds and containers of chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally works in cramped and inconvenient surroundings requiring manipulation of equipment in awkward positions for prolonged periods. Work frequently requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods. May move furniture and operate high impact pneumatic hammers and various carpentry and masonry tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is accomplished both inside and outside. When working outside, is often exposed to hot sun for extended periods of time and occasionally to bad weather. Outside work may be done in marsh areas or under hot and dusty conditions for extended periods. Inside work is often accomplished structural areas with minimum ventilation and/or limited access. Employee wears respirators, gloves, and other personal protective equipment designed to nullify risks of exposure to toxic dust and sprays from pesticide mixing and dispersal operations that might damage health. Damage to health may occur if appropriate safety procedures are not followed. Discomfort may be experienced while wearing protective clothing, respirators, goggles, or face masks for extended periods of time. May be exposed to poisonous insects, reptiles, and plants, and to wild and rabid animals.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
