This position is located on a Forest Service unit and is assigned a variety of complex and recurring technical duties individually or as a crew member or leader, in support of the unit's various natural resource management program areas.

Duties

Performs the full range of standardized forestry support duties for assigned resource area(s) such as timber, silviculture, recreation, wilderness, or research activities. Assists in one or more of the following duties: cruising timber by following specific instructions on taking and recording simple measurements and running compass lines in the field using compass and chain. May also assist with noting compliance with rules and regulations on parking, campfire, sanitation, use of picnic sites, or hunting and fishing. May also assist with maintaining and cleaning up recreation/wilderness areas, or performing various standard duties related to silviculture activities. Uses tools such as crosscut saws, adze, axes, and hand tools to maintain wilderness areas, facilities, and trails. Assists in wildlife or fisheries habitat improvement work by performing specific tasks in wildlife stand improvement. Performs trail maintenance to meet established trail standards. Improves the quality of wilderness areas by reducing erosion at campsites and restoring the area's natural vegetation. Clears and dismantles abandoned camps, packs out garbage and occasionally helps develop and present Leave No Trace camping programs. Takes and/or records basic measurements such as compass readings, distance measurements, tree heights, tree diameters, tree growth, and determines common species. Receives training on marking trees for cutting using tools such as Spiegel Relaskop, clinometer, compass, chain, diameter tape, increment borer, electronic field data recorder, etc. Performs data collection from a checklist for use in inventorying and monitoring resources.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Your application and resume must clearly show that you possess the experience requirements. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5). Examples of specialized experience include: Performing Forestry technician work; or engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment. Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use. Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work. Techniques and practices relating to natural resources management programs, (i.e., timber and silviculture, recreation and trails, wildlife, fisheries, watershed improvement, range, special uses, and others). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
