Duties
Provide in depth, expert research and reference service using a broad range of current and retrospective sources in a variety of formats to perform searches in a multitude of databases accessible through information retrieval systems.
Write text for libraries intranet home page, sends e-mail messages, publishes fact sheets, and orientates new staff.
Provide comprehensive cataloging and classification services in support of the organization 's medical mission and performs a systems administrator for integrated online library system.
Serve as coordinator for procurement of all publications by numerous departments to avoid duplication by maintaining online catalog.
Design training programs, briefings, and demonstrations of hardware and software for library staff and customers to increase user proficiency of medical library resources.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- This position may be designated "Mission Essential." In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Librarian (Medical & Biological Sciences):
Degree: Completed one full academic year of graduate study in library science from an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts)
OR
A total of at least five years in a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
For Librarian (Medical & Biological Sciences): Applicants must also possess specialized knowledge of a subject-matter field and/or proficiency directly related to the position being filled. Such knowledge is required for the position, an applicant's education or experience must have included or been supplemented by the requirements specified in the paragraphs below:
A full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university that meets all academic requirements for a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in the specialized field for which the applicant is being considered, e.g., physical science, biological science, social science; or that included any combination of subjects with at least 15 semester hours in a major subject (such as physics or chemistry) that is especially applicable to the position for which the applicant is being considered. OR
Four years of pertinent experience of such nature and level to provide a knowledge of the basic principles, theories, practices, techniques, terminology and expressions of the appropriate discipline or subject-matter field; an understanding of the standard methods, procedures, and techniques of research and analysis in the subject-matter field; ability to acquire additional information about the field and related fields; and some knowledge of literature resources in the field.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: working as a librarian providing reference services to a medical or nursing department or school (e.g. School of Medicine) at a teaching hospital, university hospital, or academic health sciences institution; developing formal instructions to present to a range of audiences in a variety of settings; cataloging items; and managing searches for research projects, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
