Duties

As a Lead Research Microbiologist you will: Serve as a Team Leader. Lead the team in: identifying, distributing and balancing workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level and/or occupational specialization; making adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks; and ensuring that each employee has an integral role in developing the final team product. Serve as a senior scientist and nationally recognized technical authority in viral diagnostics. Plan, prioritize, initiate, design, conduct, coordinate, direct, lead basic and apply research studies, particularly as related to development of novel diagnostics for virus families that cause diseases of humans. Provide consultation and advice to the agency in areas of personal research expertise. Participate in the development of policy and educational documents and on review and advisory panels.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: conducting national and international studies and/or surveillance for detection and sequencing of viruses. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

College or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
