The primary purpose of this position is to serve as archivist for the Head Quarters (HQ) 9 AF (Air Forces Central) History Office. Provides professional archival management oversight and technical guidance to subordinate units in the air component. Duties

Performs advanced professional archival research and reference services. Disseminates historical information through sound archival management: Maintains the air component archive containing classified and unclassified material. Performs a variety of duties in History, research and reference services. Answers requests for historical information requiring complex research in multiple sources. Carries out special assignments. Performing archival conservation and preservation work on the historic collections at the Command.

  • This is a testing designated position in accordance with Air Force Instruction (AFI) 44-107. The incumbent will be subject to random testing for drug use.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret, Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) Security Clearance. This position is designated Special Sensitive and requires eligibility for access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (cont'd)

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Professional and Scientific Positions for Archivist Series, 1420. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. OR Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-09, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes include knowledge of general archival principles and procedures and historical methods, principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, to include knowledge of United States and United States Air Force (USAF) history, the history of air power, and/or military aerospace history including knowledge of the USAF's heraldry and emblem programs. OR EDUCATION: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures and historical methods, principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, to include knowledge of United States and USAF history, the history of air power, and/or military aerospace history including knowledge of the USAF's heraldry and emblem programs. Skills in historical research, including the ability to determine the validity of historical information. Skill in professional historical writing, including the ability to present information objectively. Skill in researching records to extract detailed information, to include skill in organizing files, documents and records. Skill in the use of personal computer for researching and maintaining databases, retrieving information, scanning documents and heraldry products, word processing, graphic design, and electronic transmission of information. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
