About the Position: This position is responsible for establishing or adapting criteria to collect, analyze, compile, interpret & report subsurface data and inspection findings needed to develop or maintain structural and geotechnical instrumentation solutions to support the design, construction, and ongoing operations of flood damage reduction dams, and similar water control structures.
Duties
Interpret geological, structural, and geotechnical data, defining and determining the purpose of instruments and applicable system.
Utilize instrumentation to monitor geotechnical or structural response data in support of the design, construction, and operation of structures and parts.
Advise team and coordinate with district managers on matters pertaining to Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD).
Monitor and assist with modifications to existing computer applications for instrumentation data collection.
Select computer applications and coordinate these programs during all phases of construction.
Analyze and study complex geotechnical instrumentation operating systems.
Analyze data to determine adequacy, reliability, and impact of changes.
Coordinate workload of other team members within the District.
Conduct field examinations to inspect flood damage reduction projects for dam safety changes.
Collect, review, and transmit instrumentation data for existing and new constructions.
Research or provide immediate field input on unusual data trends.
Evaluate changed conditions, identifies and reports unforeseen difficulties, and recommends solutions.
Provide advice and guidance on software programs and capabilities.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 10% of the time.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education or experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience (GS-08): One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) utilizing instrumentation to monitor geotechnical or structural response data in support of the design, construction, and operations of various flood damage reduction structures and navigation projects, 2) interpreting geological, structural, and geotechnical data to determine instrumentation need, 3) conducting field examinations for dam safety, and evaluating changed conditions, 4) monitoring and assisting with modifications to computer applications for instrumentation data collection. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: One and a half years (i.e., 27 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as: Engineering, Engineering technology, Business, Business Administration, Natural Sciences (biology, geology, agriculture, ecology, plant and soil science etc.) (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
