This position is organizationally aligned under Facility Management Service (FMS), at the VA Illiana Health Care System VA Hospital (550), Danville, IL - a complexity level 3 VHA facility. The incumbent functions as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic (HVAC Mechanic) Leader within the HVAC Shop, Operations and Maintenance, Facility Management Division.

Duties

Responsible for the operation, maintenance, trouble shooting, and repair of all air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, and heating systems and all associated equipment. Responsible for passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisor and getting work started by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individuals members of the group. Installs, adjusts, and maintains heating equipment, valves, air handlers, convectors, heaters, motorized/solenoid valves and traps on electronic and pneumatic control systems. Assist the supervisor in preparation of estimates and ordering of materials for constructions, maintenance, repair, or improvements to systems and structures through the Medical Center. Maintain a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives. Track inventory, tools, and equipment assigned to him/her, safeguarding such material from loss or theft, and assuring continuous accountability. Adhere to OSHA guidelines and promotes safety practices around the work area, in the use of tools and equipment on the job. Check the work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Read blueprints of machinery and systems and must be able to determine faults in systems using electrical prints and schematic drawings. Prepare requests for repair parts, material, and operating supplies using manufacturer's pamphlets and commercial trade catalogs and submit to Supervisor for ordering. Report to supervisors on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays. Answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems. Help train employees on proper steps in completing work orders and associated tasks. Cut and thread and install pipe; cut, solder, brass tubing; charge or purge refrigeration and air systems; adjust heating systems; repair and replace pumps; clean and repair heat exchangers; remove and replace bearing, rings, valves, gaskets, and other similar parts; clean or replace filters. Physical Requirements: Constant heavy lifting is required. The use of heavy tools (wrenches, etc.) is necessary. This position requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and climb. The work being done requires physical strain from lifting, pushing, working in cramped positions and from ladders. Incumbent must be in excellent physical condition to perform all required work. Required to work overtime in case of emergencies, sometimes working long hours until job is accomplished and service to the medical center has been restored. Incumbent must be mentally alert to device improved methods in order to accomplish the required work assigned to the refrigeration shop operation. Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing such items as large compressors. Make repairs that involve frequently hard-to reach places that require scaffolding. Could involve long periods of stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling. Frequently works in confined area. Working Conditions: Subject to extreme heat, explosive hazards, and scalding water, steam line breaks, flare backs, noisy environment and chemical bums. Work is subject to dirty, dusty, and greasy conditions. Frequently exposed to the possibility of severe strains, cuts, bums, noise, eye damage, bruises and infection and is, therefore, required to use appropriate procedures and personal protective equipment. May be required to identify asbestos contaminated materials for abatement and will then contact the appropriate designee for testing and abatement of area containing ACM.
