The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a missile system engineering technician, supporting maintenance activities affecting ICBM launch and missile-alert facilities. Provides weapon system technical expertise, material and data resources.

Duties

Provide extensive engineering technician technical expertise to analyze ICBM weapon system and subsystem component operations for the Missile Wing. Solve a wide range of methodological problems beyond the scope of technical data. Conduct engineering analyses of electronic, electrical components and some mechanical devices to support operations and improve weapon system reliability and maintainability. Develop repair procedures or replacement strategies for equipment that is no longer procurable. Deploy periodically to the missile field.

  • Work will require approximately seven days per month of off-duty telephone standby.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft or government vehicle.
  • The duties of this position will require the employee to drive a special purpose motor vehicle in an official capacity. A valid state operators and military vehicle driver's license will be required for the position.
  • This position meets the administrative exemption criteria for the Fair Labor Standards Act (5 CFR 551.206).

Qualifications

Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions. Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes use concepts, practices, regulations, policies, and precedents; analytical and diagnostic techniques; qualitative and quantitative techniques; to assist with or to independently develop new or modified work methods, approaches, or procedures; and related emerging practices and methods sufficient to: provide comprehensive management advisory and technical services on substantive functions and practices; develop innovative methods, approaches, or procedures; identify, evaluate, and recommend appropriate solutions to resolve complex interrelated problems and issues; and formulate and present finding briefings, project papers, status reports, and correspondence to foster understanding and acceptance of findings and recommendations NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Technical and working knowledge of electrical engineering concepts, principles, practices, and familiarity with other engineering disciplines and architecture. 2. Technical and working knowledge of the operations, products, services, needs, and goals of programs and assigned organizations and related customers, functions, resources, and users. 3. Knowledge of automated data processing concepts, systems capabilities, and economic usage to effectively accomplish assigned functions. 4. Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations, and/or technical orders. 5. Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and procedures to a variety of situations and to recommend timely and economical solutions. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety. Requires employee to complete an AETC specialized technical engineering course, maintain qualification on LF penetration/back-out and emergency operations; ground, missile and nuclear safety requirements; security requirements; MPH procedures; EWO support requirements; critical component control; CPR/first aid, shotgun and other appropriate training. Work Environment Work is usually performed in an office setting, although there will be requirements to dispatch to the missile field to troubleshoot and repair faults as required. Work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, such as the following: dust, strong odors, or fumes from fuels, chemicals, or engine exhaust; high levels of noise and vibration, dust, grease, electrical hazards, uncovered moving parts of machinery, moving machinery; or outdoor conditions involving moderate exposure to rain and cold/hot weather. Physical Demands Work is a mix of sedentary and some physical exertion/hazards. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for items such as, but not limited to: -- Working around energized electrical circuits (electrical shock and burns). -- Soldering (burns, hazardous fumes, and splattering solder that can cause eye damage). -- Pressurized lines, such as whipping hoses (eye damage). -- Common tools and power tools (scrapes, punctures, and eye damage). -- Cold weather (frostbite and hypothermia). -- Driving around the missile complex (inclement weather, wildlife, and falling asleep). -- Falling Hazards (off ladders, and down missile silos). PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
