The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures labor market activity, working conditions, price changes, and productivity in the U.S. economy to support public and private decision making. The position is located in the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of Field Operations. This position is outside the bargaining unit.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Formulates, conducts, and guides economic projects, analyses, or programs with great impact and significance to the agency Conceptualizes large or complex economic problems, performs economic research, and conducts integrated studies related to economic programs, functions, and principles Advises and provides support on aspects of data collection that include conducting research in innovative methods of data collection, reducing survey respondent burden, supporting the continuation of automating data collection, and the use of alternative data Works with program and project managers and representatives of BLS regional offices to ensure implementation of priorities and plans involving field operations within cost ceilings established Coordinates requirements of both BLS regional and state government personnel by providing the operational information and technical guidance needed to affect a high-quality, viable data collection program

Requirements

Qualifications

You must meet the Basic Requirements and the Specialized Experience to qualify for Economist, as described below. Basic Requirement Economist, 0110: A) Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. OR B) Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized Experience Specialized experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. GS-15: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience to at least the next lower grade level, GS-14, in the Federal Service. This experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position to be filled. Specialized experience may include: Managing and overseeing projects within a major labor statistics program involving data collection, data analysis, estimation, and publication, which provides significant products or services to the public; Applying strategic, analytical, and evaluative techniques to direct projects, such as determining program goals and objectives, planning work, and ensuring the integrity or program data; Providing guidance and structure for assisting and/or improving operations, processes, and systems using advanced economic theory
