This position is located in the National Weather Service (NWS), National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), Central Operations (NCO), with one vacancy in Miami, FL. Duties

As an IT Specialist, you will perform the following duties: As a subject matter expert, assumes full responsibility for maintaining system administration operations and customer support issues. Implements the installation, testing, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of hardware and software systems; provides new, expanded or enhanced services. Diagnoses significantly difficult software faults and troubleshoots complex problems involving issues related to the design, development, capacity management and administration of critical applications. As a senior technical specialist manages and configures multiple areas of system administration such as; server configuration, virtual configuration, file system configuration, advanced file systems management, security, storage area networks, and hardware architecture. Proposes, designs, implements, and tests system configuration modifications to enhance functionality and provide new, expanded or enhanced services. Responds to and resolves complex with software, hardware and systems management. Integrates several hardware, software, and/or computer related services to provide an integrated information system. Evaluates vendor developed software to assure that it will provide the desired results and operate properly on assigned equipment systems. Recommends innovative solutions and new approaches in administration of infrastructure technology designed to optimize the customer and agency experience. Works with helpdesk to ensure all tickets are updated and resolved in a timely manner. Serves as escalation point for helpdesk tickets to including those occurring afterhours. These duties are described at the full performance level of the GS-13; the GS-11 and GS-12 are developmental leading to such performance.

Qualification requirements in the vacancy announcements are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook, which contains federal qualification standards. The employing agency is responsible for identifying the specific level of proficiency required for each competency at each grade level based on the requirements of the position being filled. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at the GS-:11 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the IT competencies above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Participating in the coordination and the installation of testing, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of hardware and software systems; and Assisting with resolving problems with software, hardware and systems management. OR I have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks. To qualify at the GS-:12 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the IT competencies above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Performing installation, testing, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of hardware and software systems; and Providing customer support and solutions to issues. To qualify at the GS-:13 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the IT competencies above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Overseeing, managing and configuring multiple areas of system administration such as; server configuration, virtual configuration, file system configuration, advanced file systems management, security, storage area networks, and hardware architecture; Working with management on assignments, projects, problems that need to be resolved; and Leading helpdesk staff and keeping employees informed of all new services, modifications, and recurring problems.

Education

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements.
