About the Position: Join us at the United States Southern Command. We provide direct support to a four-star unified Combatant Commander, but are compact enough that our staff also works with senior leadership representatives of our inter-service, inter-agency and (public and private) international partner organizations.
Duties
Function as the principal translator for the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM).
Provide the full spectrum of translator services for the organization, installation, Department of the Army (DA), Department of Defense (DOD); including other Federal/State government agencies, and international governments and/or organizations.
Perform work in translating (speaking, reading, and writing) the Spanish and Portuguese languages and its many dialects (North/Central/South American and the Caribbean Islands) into the English language and vice versa.
Participate in the development and/or revision of technical and non-technical glossaries and/or literary works, used both nationally and internationally.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Expert knowledge of English, Spanish, and Portuguese required.
- Proficiency levels for each language are general professional proficiency or advance professional proficiency in listening, reading and speaking Spanish (level 3) and Portuguese (level 2+).
- Brazilian Portuguese and/or French limited working proficiency is desired.
- Business travel/temporary duty (TDY) required 20% of the time. Travelling outside of the Continental United States may be required to perform translating and interpreting functions at high-level official meetings and functions.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance.
- Drug testing is required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes translating orally and in writing information such as cultural, political, human rights, peacekeeping operations, homeland security, financial management, etc. from English to Spanish and Portuguese, including the range of dialects (North, Central, and South American and Caribbean Islands) and vice versa; editing translations accomplished by others, using correct wording, structure, punctuation, and format; AND conducting research to determine meaning of highly specialized terminology in order to express the intent of original texts. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Language Proficiency: This position requires expert level proficiency of Portuguese and Spanish, including a range of dialects (North, Central, and South American and Caribbean Islands) in order to provide error-free, grammatically correct translations orally and in writing.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
