This Maintenance Mechanic position requires the use of a variety of trade practices associated with the Pipefitter, Sheet Metal Mechanic and Welder positions. Duties

Must be able to perform work without more than normal supervision. Receives assignments through Information Work Management System (IWMS), Supervisors or Work Leaders. Responds to building emergencies. Works with other trades to ensure that all specifications, regulations and policies are met to ensure efficient completion of assigned projects. Provides technical input, reviews, comments and advises / assists project managers, supervisors and other trades on designs for repair and alteration projects. Interprets and works from building plans, drawings, sketches, specifications, technical manuals and oral instructions independently. Interprets and executes work outlined in work orders, drawings, building plans, sketches, emails and specifications. Plans and implements projects from initial layout to completion when accuracy, fit, structural soundness and compliance with building standards are essential. Plans and lays out the route, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction and expansion of various piping systems and equipment; clears difficult stoppages in drainpipes and sewer lines. Connects, solders, brazes and maintains lines for air, natural gas, manufactured gas, sewage, water fixtures and facilities, such as fire hydrants, sprinkler systems and all other related system. Installs, modifies and repairs piping systems by setting up system routes and locating, placing and cutting route openings through which pipes pass or in which equipment will be installed. Determines and installs items such as risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges and pressure regulators to support the system pressure and operation of piping systems and equipment. Plans, designs templates, lays out, fabricates, repairs, modifies and installs sheet metal parts, items and assemblies for heating, air conditioning and ventilating pipes and other systems. Plans, design templates, lays out, fabricates, repairs, modifies and installs tanks, air conditioning and filter frames for housing various types of containers and other mechanical systems. Many parts, items and assemblies are unconventional, one-of-a-kind items, systems or apparatuses which require flexibility to adapt to change. Constructs truncated or frustum cones that require the least amount of seams, and metal, dovetailed bottoms, wired seams or lock seams and require the use of parallel and radial line development and triangulation principles. Joins and installs irregular items, systems and shapes with the least number of seams and the least amount of metal, such as honeycomb material, galvanized and black iron, stainless steel, etc. Welds together all different types of metals and alloys, such as stainless steel and sheet aluminum, cast iron, nickel, brass, copper, bronze and bronze metals and pipes using intense heat and gas. Manufactures, repairs, modifies, rebuilds and assembles various types of metal and alloy parts, equipment, systems and structures. Uses accepted trade methods and a variety of manual welding processes, such as gas torch, electric arc or combinations of processes to weld all types of metals and alloys. Uses preheating, heat sinks and stress relieving techniques to maintain specified dimensions and to prevent distortion or burning of the parts being welded. Welds metal parts and structures that may vary in size, shape and thickness from very thin (for example, .025 inches or less) to very thick (for example, structural steel) requiring multiple welding passes. Performs a variety of trade related procedures such as brazing, silver soldering, flame and arc-cutting, surface hardening, annealing and metal.

Qualifications

To qualify for this WG-11 MAINTENANCE MECHANIC position you must demonstrate: (1)the Screen Out AND (2) the six individual Job Elements SCREEN OUT - ABILITY TO DO MAINTENANCE MECHANIC WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION REQUIREMENT: Performs work in Pipefitting, Sheet Metal and Welding trades. Installs, maintains, modifies and repairs new and existing high and low-pressure piping systems; plans, lays out and develops templates to construct, fabricate, assemble, repair, modify and install sheet metal parts; and uses a variety of manual welding processes to join all types of commonly used metals and alloys. You must demonstrate fundamental knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to perform the work of the Maintenance Mechanic trade. At a minimum, your work must not require more than regular spot checks or guidance during progress and upon completion. (2) JOB ELEMENTS: Describe duties you perform that show you have (at a minimum): -- fundamental knowledge of equipment required for sheet metal and welding work and/or equipment needed to maintain high-pressure piping systems -- ability to apply Maintenance Mechanic technical practices to perform common pipefitting, sheet metal or welding tasks -- ability to use common Maintenance Mechanic measuring instruments -- ability to read and interpret common Mechanical Maintenance instructions and complete common pipefitting, sheet metal or welding projects -- regular hands-on use of common tools used in the Maintenance Mechanic trade -- ability to determine the types of materials needed to complete common pipefitting, sheet metal and/or welding tasks YOUR RESUME MUST SPECIFICALLY ADDRESS THE SCREEN OUT AND JOB ELEMENTS FOR THIS POSITION. CONDITIONS OF POSITION: Due to the nature of work in this position, the following conditions are essential for successful performance, and you must fully comply with these conditions to meet performance requirements. Successful performance of work in this position and adherence to these conditions will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period that may be served by new appointees (e.g., new to SSA and/or new to this series). This is an emergency / mission-critical position. You may be called to work after-hours, on weekends and holidays. This position is not authorized for telework. (1) Maintenance Mechanics perform duties in a workshop and at job sites and may work in confined areas, which may be dusty, greasy and dirty. (2) Working in shop areas exposes employee to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, air particulates, chemical fumes and hazards associated with power equipment. (3) Working at job sites exposes employees to weather conditions, bad smelling fumes and uncomfortable heat. (4) Maintenance Mechanics may be subject to toxic fumes and burns from hot water and steam while repairing leaks in high and low-pressure steam piping and frequent exposure to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises and infections. (5) Welding work involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches and heated materials, the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns and broken bones and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. (6) There is discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves and flash shield or eye goggles. (7) May be required to support other agency buildings to provide critical services to sustain the operational needs of agency buildings. (8) May be required to report to or remain at a duty station to perform critical services when employees are generally excused for all or part of a workday in emergency conditions. (9) May be required to report during irregular hours and travel in hazardous weather conditions. The employee is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year around. (10) May be required to wear a uniform while working at the duty station. (11) Maintenance Mechanics are required to understand and follow mandated safety procedures and wear mandated Personal Protective Equipment to include, but not limited to earplugs, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, gloves and any other gear required by the supervisor.
