Duties
Decontaminate a full range of instruments and sets from the clinics, wards and the Main Operating Room (MOR).
Disassemble, clean, and reassemble equipment where the internal parts may have become contaminated.
Operate various types of equipment, such as, but not limited to, cart washers, ultra-sonic cleaners, washer-sterilizers, washer-decontaminators, STERRAD plasma sterilizers, and steam sterilizers.
Maintain accurate records and logbooks for all items sterilized.
Accurately verify outside labeling of sets and small counts to the appropriate surgical service.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
- Complies with strict dress code as mandated by Command and OSHA regulations, and the Infection Control policy, and recommendations from AAMI.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Incumbent performs work on a regular day, evening, or night shift, which includes weekends, and holidays, with rotation as the workload demands as directed by the Main Operating Room Department Head, and the Division Officer of CPD.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assembling medical instrument trays for medical procedures; wrapping and labeling instrument sets for the sterilization process; checking supplies for compliance with regulations and policies; and decontaminating a full range of reusable medical supplies and/or equipment used in surgeries or other medical procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of post-secondary level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as medical supply processing, sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed post-secondary level semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
