This position serves as a Chaplain (Pediatric) in the NIH Clinical Center (CC), Spiritual Care Department (SCD) where the mission is to respond to the religious, spiritual, existential and emotional concerns of patients participating in clinical trials, their families and supporters as well as clinical staff and employees working in the CC regardless of religious affiliation, personal philosophy or belief; and to support the educational and research mission of the NIH. Duties

The Chaplain (Pediatric): Provides chaplaincy services to children and adolescents (through age 18) in the Clinical Center's medical and behavior health inpatient units, day-hospitals, and outpatient clinics. Asesses pediatric patients' spiritual needs and develops care plans in a manner that is developmentally appropriate to the pediatric patient's age, cognitive ability and health status (inclusive of those with a terminal diagnosis). Engages in honest and frank conversations with pediatric patients regarding their spiritual, emotional, existential and religious concerns in a manner and with vocabulary and concepts with which the patient can identify and engage. Provides chaplaincy services to parents and siblings of pediatric patients as individuals and as a family unit.

  • Work is performed primarily in the clinical environment requiring periods of standing and walking and the ability to don and remove protective clothing.
  • Must be available to work Holidays, Weekends and participate in the 24 hour on-call rotation as assigned. This is a Tier I Emergency Employee Position
  • The Chaplain must be fully certified as a Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by the Association of Professional Chaplains or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains at EOD and during employment.
  • Applicants must possess a Master of Divinity from an accredited institution, OR its equivalent as required by the applicant's faith group for endorsement in ministry and the applicant's professional chaplaincy certifying organization.
  • Must possess or obtain before EOD and maintain current endorsement for ministry and current faculties from the appropriate ecclesiastical authorities that will permit him to minister in a civilian facility in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification: Applicants must possess a Master of Divinity from an accredited institution, OR its equivalent as required by the applicant's faith group for endorsement in ministry and the applicant's professional chaplaincy certifying organization, OR a bachelor's degree from an accredited institute plus at least 70 graduate semester hours which includes at least 20 semester hours in pastoral ministry; 20 semester hours in any combination of theology, ethics, and philosophy of religion; 20 semester hours in the study of sacred writings; and 10 semester hours in religious history and/or world religion. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE): In addition to the education requirements, applicants must have completed at least four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) in a CPE center accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC). Experience required:Qualifications for GS-9: You must have at least one year of hospital based professional chaplaincy experience, after completion of the CPE requirement, which has demonstrated practical pastoral knowledge, skill, and ability to provide care under direct supervision in a pluralistic setting. Part-time experience may be prorated by comparing the average hours worked to a 40-hour week. A supervised clinical pastoral education residency in an ACPE or NACC accredited program completed within one year of application for the position is deemed to satisfy this requirement.Certification: To qualify for the GS-9, you must be eligible for chaplaincy certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), NACC, or CASC and be able to complete the certification process within two years of entry on duty. Qualifications for GS-11: You must have at least two years of hospital based chaplaincy experience, equivalent in complexity and responsibility to the GS-9 level. At least one year of this experience must follow the completion of the Master of Divinity or equivalent education. Successful completion of a doctoral degree directly related to pastoral ministry inclusive of a supervised or guided pastoral experience at an accredited college, university or seminary, in addition to the Master of Divinity or equivalent, may be substituted for one of the two years of required experience.Certification: To qualify for the GS-11, you must hold board certification as a chaplain with APC, NACC, or CASC or be eligible for same and be able to complete the certification process within one year of entry on duty. Qualifications for GS-12: You must have at least three years of hospital based chaplaincy experience, one year of which is equivalent in complexity and responsibility to the GS-11 level. At least two years of this experience must have followed completion of the Master of Divinity or equivalent education. Successful completion of a doctoral degree directly related to pastoral ministry inclusive of a supervised or guided pastoral experience, at an accredited college, university or seminary, in addition to the Master of Divinity or equivalent, may be substituted for one of the three years of required experience. One year of experience must have demonstrated all of the following: a) Ability to serve as a consultant or expert to an interdisciplinary treatment team; b) In-depth knowledge of related professional fields, particularly in the behavioral sciences; c) Understanding of, and ability to respond to, the particular concerns and issues pertaining to treatment of patients with life threatening disease and severe life-limiting illness; d) Knowledge of the structure, regulations, practices, and programs of health care delivery systems;e) Ability to interpret and apply a body of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in professional practice; and f) Ability to develop and maintain liaisons with a variety of outside organizations. As a selective factor, the successful candidate must have provided direct services to children and adolescents sufficient to have acquired skill in assessing spiritual needs and developing plans of care that are appropriate to the age, cognitive development and health status (including terminal illness) of each young person receiving care.
