Duties

This position is located within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Custom and Border Protection (CBP), United States Border Patrol (USBP), Mission Readiness Operations Division where you will be responsible for body repair projects and assignments delegated by the shop foreman or the shop supervisor. This position starts at an hourly rate of $30.90 (WG-10, Step 1) to $36.02 (WG-10, Step 5). As a Mobile Equipment Metal Mechanic, you will be working with manufacturer's representatives, commercial maintenance establishments and sources, and a variety of top management officials at sector, regional, and central office levels. Your duties will include: Utilizing industry standard techniques to complete final repairs on fleet vehicles to include, cars, trucks, vans, mobile construction equipment, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and specialty vehicles. Utilizing metal inert gas (MIG) welders, as well as acetylene and plasma torches to complete major metal repairs. Ensuring the final appearance is original equipment manufacturer (OEM) quality and meets or exceeds vehicle fleet standards. Utilizing techniques similar to OEM repair procedures, state standards, Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) body and frame repair standards, and MIG welding techniques. Plan and layout the work from blueprints and sketches provided by the supervisor with minimal oversight and assistance while interpreting the necessary vehicle body repairs based off prior training and experience.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WG-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element(s): Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision Ability to inspect Ability to instruct Ability to provide production support services Ability to lead or supervise To meet the Screen Out Element(s), you should have experience performing the following duties. Failure to meet these Screen out Element(s) will result in an ineligible rating. Assessing collision damage and wear and tear on government owned vehicles and accurately completing damage estimates and reports by determining replacement parts and corresponding part numbers; Identifying dents, waves, punctures, and other standard sheet metal and paint defects and preparing vehicle surfaces by removing and repairing any rust damage; Straightening, reinforcing, sectioning, fabricating, repairing and replacing sheet metal and components, as necessary while employing standard body repair techniques to utilize hand tools, porta-powers, power posts, shears, air hammers, rivet guns, and other commonly used body and frame repair tools and equipment; Applying and shaping body fillers, fiberglass and epoxies, as necessary, to ensure preparation has been completed and components are masked off and prepared for priming and painting; Identifying factory paint codes to mix while properly measuring blend bases, colors, additives, and hardeners to manufactures specifications before using high volume low pressure (HVLP) equipment to spray automotive grade primers, colors, and clear coats. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Skill in metal working, body repair, and the mechanical work directly related to body repairs. Skill in refinishing and paint work, including the application of plastic fillers, sanding, metal preparation, and application of primers, topcoats, and sealants. Knowledge of mobile equipment body construction to determine the extent of damage and most economical methods of repair. Ability to research repair procedures and utilize computerized estimating systems properly. Ability to interpret written instructions and carry out verbal orders.
