This position is located with Bonneville Power Administration, in The Dalles District (TFD), Transmission Field Service (TF), Transmission Services (T). A successful candidate in the System Protection Control Craftsman Trainee 7 position will performs a variety of tasks designed to provide experience which will enhance the trainee's technical understanding and skill in the use of the tools and equipment of the work.

As a System Protection Control Craftsman Trainee 7, you will:

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • This employer participates in the e-Verify program.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Establish a residence, in accordance with negotiated requirements, that is within one hour or less commuting time under normal weather and road conditions, to the duty station headquarters.
  • Satisfactory completion of each trainee step and associated related training is mandatory for advancement to the next step. Failure of any two of the step examinations will result in removal from the trainee program.
  • Become familiar with and follow the safety practices of the BPA Accident Prevention Manual.
  • This position requires a preemployment medical exam, at BPA expense, prior to appointment due to the physical requirements of the position.
  • After employment, this position may be subject to periodic physical examinations, as prescribed by competent medical authority and at BPA expense, if exposed to health hazards.
  • Possess a restricted electrical worker's permit or obtain one within 120 days after the requirement is established.
  • This position requires a valid driver's license as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate certifications and permits, including appropriate worker and access permits and standard clearance certifications.
  • Obtain within 1 year after appointment, and maintain continuously thereafter, a valid First Aid card, CPR card, or appropriate training.
  • Operate motor vehicles, including 1-1/2 ton pickups, sedans, van type trucks, forklifts, and 4x4's. Be certified to operate specialized equipment if assigned to use.
  • Subject to call for emergency work at any time.
  • Required to wear protective apparel such as apparel, respirators, etc. when required for worker safety.
  • Frequent and overnight travel is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed primarily indoors. Some work will involve travel to remote sites or substations, and may be performed in adverse weather conditions which includes extremes of temperature. The employee may be exposed to electrical hazards of all voltages existing in the BPA system, and will be expected to work occasionally on substation equipment at heights 40 feet above the ground. The work environment will occasionally include high noise levels or exposure to toxic or hazardous substances (i.e., acids, solvents, PCB's, mercury, pesticides, etc.) that could, if precautions are not followed, pose a health risk. Proper respiratory and safety equipment shall be worn when hazardous substances are being handled. PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Incumbents must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others. Able to climb ladders and work at heights averaging 5-7 feet, and on rare occasions up to 40 feet. Requires good balance to climb ladders and stepstools. Average of 1-2 hours uninterrupted, with a maximum of 4 hours while testing and looking at prints. To drive vehicles to and from work sites and while testing and repairing equipment; performs office work. Lifts and carries test equipment. Average is 30-50 pounds with a maximum of 60-70 pounds rarely. Lifts, moves, carries, repositions, and operates test equipment and vehicles. Performs diagnostic testing, wiring, assembly, installation and repair of equipment requiring fine finger manipulation. Able to communicate with co-workers and to provide clear, accurate communication. Requires good spatial ability/depth perception, night vision and sufficient color discrimination to distinguish color-coding or shade variations. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
