This position is organizationally aligned under Facility Management Service, at the VA Illiana Health Care System VA Hospital, Danville, IL. The primary purpose of this position is to perform the full range of gardening and tractor operating within the Grounds Section.
Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to perform the full range of gardening and tractor operating within the Grounds Section, including but not limited to the following: sod cutting; laying sod; fertilizing (with no herbicides) using fertilizer spreaders/sprayer, trimming and transplanting trees, shrubbery, and plants; mowing; weed eating; pruning; and seeding. In addition, performs seasonal snow/ice removal and salt spreading; assists other workers in transporting furniture and supplies. Performs all types of laboring duties to include loading/unloading furniture, loading/unloading recyclable materials containers, moving equipment, moving patient's belongings, and dumping waste containers and all other assigned tasks. This position combines laboring duties and operation of tractors and grounds maintenance lawn tractors used by the Grounds Section.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Work requires a considerable amount of time standing, stooping, walking, and bending. The incumbent will be exposed to seasonal weather and may be required to work in inclement weather, such as snow, rain, sleet, and indoors under extreme or hazardous conditions. The incumbent will exert additional effort in operating the tractor and manipulating equipment controls to compensate for difficult terrain. Position requires frequent arm and leg movement, and lifting bags of fertilizer and seed, etc., weighing up to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions: The majority of the work is performed out of doors, sometimes in extremely inclement weather. The incumbent is subject to physical injuries while operating power equipment and falls from ladders while pruning trees. The incumbent works on steep slopes and in rough terrain and may be subject to injury from falls or overturned tractors and equipment.
