Duties
Directs all aspects of the fuels management program including planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation.
Develops and implements short-term fire management objectives and strategies based on the effects and behavior of prescribed fire.
Plans and administers the technical and administrative aspects of the prescribed fire/fuels management program.
Exercises the full range of leadership and supervisory direction for the primary Fuels Management staff.
Establishes, defines and plans work assignments, performance standards, interviews prospective employees, performs personnel ratings, etc.
Plans, conducts surveys, analyzes, and evaluates data to develop prescriptions for prescribed fire, treatment effectiveness and wildland fire monitoring.
Responsible for administration of a variety of management programs such as safety, upward mobility, cost reduction, sick leave, EEO, drug free workplace, overtime usage, suggestions, etc.

- Supervisory Probationary Period: If you are selected for this position, you will be required to serve a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period if one has not previously been completed.
- This position requires regular and recurring overtime and shift work.

- An applicant appointed to this position must possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position.
- Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
Qualifications

At the GS-12: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience leading multiple program areas such as fuels management, fire planning, weed management, forestry or emergency stabilization and rehabilitation/restoration, etc.; planning work and managing work assignments; directing program staff to achieve workload targets; developing and implementing Employee Performance and Appraisal Plans, Individual Development Plans, and other supervisory documents.
This is a SECONDARY/Administrative fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age (MEA) policy, the selectee must have prior service in a primary position and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure this office has enough information to determine your retirement status to ensure you do not lose benefits(normally through submission of your SF-50). YOU MUST LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN A PRIMARY POSITION.

Physical Demands: Work in the office is primarily sedentary. Field work does require frequent physical exertion, involving walking over rough terrain, sometimes for extended periods, and working under occasionally inclement (hot, cold, snow, wind, etc.) weather conditions.
Work Environment: Work is performed in both an office and field setting with field work. Field work involves exposure to temperature extremes, both from weather and fire conditions where falling trees and the presence of smoke and/or dust conditions create hazardous conditions. The nature of fire management work requires that protective clothing (boots, hard hats, etc.) be worn. The incumbent must exercise a variety of safety practices and precautions for the well-being of self and of others.
Education
This position falls under the Wildland Firefighter Series, 0456. There are Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for this job series.
There is no substitution of education for experience at this grade level.
