Incumbent operates and maintains water tube and fire tube boilers while stationed in Fargo, ND at the Fargo VA Health Care System. During assigned shift incumbent is sole operator of a boiler plant with capacity of 41,400 pounds of steam per hour.

Duties

Duties for this position include but are not limited to the following: Manage and help train employees on proper steps in completing work orders and associated tasks. Overseeing management and proper delegation of work to shop personnel in terms of corrective and preventative maintenance. Reporting to supervisor if even workload, insufficient work output or subpar quality is observed from shop personnel. Working along with other workers and setting the pace. Demonstrating proper work methods. Provides expertise and advises on project designs in relation to boiler plant operations and maintenance. Seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy. Troubleshoot, identify needed parts, locate best sources, and initiate necessary procurement for parts and services needed to maintain equipment. Monitors water conditioning equipment to control and/or remove impurities and entrapped gases. Assesses, proposed, and administers water treatment and related contract services, as required. Operates and monitors fuel pressure, control valves, fuel strainers, relief valves, water softeners, and other similar equipment through manual and automatic means. Operates dampers, forced draft fans, and pumps. Lights off, operates, secures, and maintains power boilers and associated auxiliary equipment. Operates and maintains natural gas and oil-fired power boilers and ancillary powered auxiliary equipment with manual and automatic controls to produce saturated steam. Working Conditions: Frequently works in confined areas in and around boilers and other mechanical equipment. Work is performed generally indoors but without temperature control, where there is exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals, extreme temperatures, steam, noise, and unpleasant odors. Occasionally provides service and response in outdoor areas under adverse conditions. Exposure may cause potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. Operator comes in contact with hazardous chemicals such as caustics, acids, phosphates, amines, hydroxides, steam, and hazardous equipment. Incumbent shall employ good safety practices and procedures to avoid injury to self, other personnel, and/or equipment which may seriously affect the operation of the hospital.
