Duties
As a GS-0644-13, Chief Medical Technologist (Hematology), your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Develops policy and coordinates changes within the department and other departments.
Institutes new organizational structures to handle changing workload needs.
Works directly with section leadership, senior investigators and technical staff in the implementation of new or changing programs and policies (e.g., CLIA) to include staffing, training, reports and inspections.
Is responsible for applying the principles of equal employment opportunity (EEO). Takes action to be acquainted with official EEO policy and principles and takes steps towards progress in the area supervised, and informs all personnel of changes in policy and procedures through memoranda and/or meetings. Ensures that the written standards of procedure and policy are adhered to by the staff; responsible for the training and enforcement of these standards.
Directs development of in-depth written procedure manuals according to NCCLS, CAP, and JC standards, including test protocols and quality control. Ensures that manuals are kept current and coordinates the annual update and review of service and departmental policies which define the standards for work processes and interpretation of laboratory reports.
Reviews and ensures the accuracy of information distributed to patient care providers. Serves as a consultant to patient-care physicians regarding specimen collection and handling techniques, as well as interpretation and limitation of test procedures. Communicates directly with nursing staff and patient-care physicians concerning complaints and misunderstandings of laboratory policies and procedures.
Investigates and assists in the development of policy and coordinates work related changes with other hospital departments; i.e., patient care physicians, Nursing, Outpatient Services, Transfusion Medicine, etc.
Contributes to the preparation of annual budget requests and justifications. Projects needs of the Service for planned expansion or changes such as bringing tests performed by contract laboratories in house. Prepares budget initiatives for the annual budget submission and assists the Department Chief in the establishment of new services such as cross training in a new service delivery model. Reviews monthly financial statements for variance, maintains budget spreadsheets and adjusts rate of spending to remain within allocated funds.
